Dec. 11 Deadline to Nominate 2016 Outstanding African-American of the Year
Nominations are now being accepted for the “2016 Outstanding African American Award” that will be presented by Aurora’s African-American Heritage Advisory Board during the 12th Annual Heritage Dinner on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016.
The Outstanding African-American of the Year Award is bestowed upon a local African-American each year who has demonstrated consistent leadership in and committed service to Aurora’s African-American community and the City at large. Previous award recipients are: Judge Keith Brown, Henry Cowherd, Donnell Collins, Alderman Scheketa Hart-Burns, Sherman Jenkins, Cynthia Latimer, Clayton Muhammad, Archie Needham, Lillian Perry and Anthony Stanford.
Nominations must include a brief biographical sketch of the nominee and detailed information of his or her work in the community. Submissions can be made by individuals and organizations by completing the nomination form (also available at www.aurora-il.org) or email the requested information on the form to AAHAB Chairman Toussaint Smith at tou828@gmail.com. Deadline for submission is Friday, Dec. 11, 2015.
Cowherd Scholars
The scholarship application is available here and also online at www.aurora-il.org. Applications and supporting documents must be postmarked by Friday, December 11 or hand-delivered/emailed to the contact information on the application by Monday, Dec. 14, 2015.
About the African-American Heritage Advisory Board
The African American Heritage Advisory Board was established to preserve the history and culture Africans and Americans of African descent by emphasizing their contributions to the Aurora, throughout America and across the globe.
Annually, AAHAB hosts the annual Heritage Dinner where it awards the Outstanding African-American of the Year and honors the Henry Cowherd Scholarship recipients. AAHAB also sponsors the annual African-American Achievers Academy of Aurora (A5) Leadership Summit.
