With most Kane County students going back to school on Jan. 4, parents are probably looking for activities involving some fresh air.

But when it comes to nature preserves and hiking trails, Kane County boasts several diverse opportunities to get out of the house and put down the smartphone. One of Kane County’s hidden gems for outdoor fun is the St. Charles Park District’s Primrose Farm. Situated on more than 100 acres of open agricultural space, this historic, working farm, offers a range of activities for children throughout the year. From milking cows to egg collecting, children are introduced to 1930s farm activities through engaging and fun demonstrations.

From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, families are invited to attend Winter on the Farm. Inside the Summer Kitchen, visitors will be able to make holiday thank you cards while listening to 1930s music and snacking on cookies and hot cocoa. Families will then have the opportunity to learn about caring for the horses, cows, sheep and chickens. Wagon rides around the latern-lit farmyard will also be available for an additional $2 per person.

“After being focused on house-related activities during the holidays, this is a great opportunity for families to get outdoors and enjoy spending time together,” shared Farm Manager Laura Johns.

Parents searching for a unique weekday activity can sign their kids up for the second annual Winter Farm Camp at Primrose. This year’s camp is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 30, both from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and requires advanced registration here.

Primrose’s Winter Farm Camp is a safe and entertaining way to spend a couple days during the holiday break.
Children ages 7-12 are invited to help with important winter activities such as sewing, gathering firewood, feeding the animals and making grain. Participants will also be able to play old-fashioned games and help to bake biscuits on the old wood stove.

“For kids who have come out to the farm for summer camps or programs, this Winter Camp gives them a chance to reconnect with the farm animals and see first-hand how Primrose Farm changes from season to season,” said Johns.
