We Could Hit 60 Degrees This Weekend — and Set Other Kinds of Weather Records, Too
I’m blaming it on El Nino.
While the state of Washington is getting hammered by record rains, we’re seeing record mild temperatures here in Kane County, IL — but the possibility of catching some of that heavy rainfall is hovering over us like a storm cloud.
First the Good News
Starting back on Wednesday, Dec. 9, we’re expected to see five consecutive days of highs in the 50s, and a high of 60 degrees is possible on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service-Chicago.
This would be the first time with five or more consecutive days of 50s temperatures in December since 2001. And if it plays out as expected, it would be the latest five-day warm streak in December since 1971 — a banner year for warmth but not for a white Christmas, when we saw 50-plus temps from Dec. 23 through Dec. 27.
The last time we hit 60 degrees in December was 2012, believe it or not, when the high reached 70 on Dec. 3.
The last time we hit 60 this late in the month was Dec. 27, 2008.
The warm temperatures might be a good reason to get to that Kane County recycling event — the last of the year and the last one until April 2016 — as well as a number of fun holiday events throughout Kane County.
Now, the Bad News
The warm comes with some wet, too. Multiple periods of rain are forecast ove the weekend, and possibly into Monday. More than 2 inches over rain could land over this three-day period, although the NWS-C warns that the forecast may shift.
As an aside, we haven’t had 2 inches of rain in three December days since 2.06 inches fell on Dec. 4 through Dec. 6, 1999.
While the pattern might shift this weekend, the 2 inches seems likely, and we might even get a thunderstorm before it’s all over, the NWS-C says.
