2015-16 UPDATE: What’s Open, Closed for New Year’s in Kane County
Here are some reminders of what’s open and what’s not on New Year’s Eve (Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015) and New Year’s Day (Friday, Jan. 1, 2016.) Most places are open on the day after New Year’s (Saturday, Jan 2.)
Kane County
Most Kane County offices are closed on New Year’s Day and most close at noon on New Year’s Eve. Obviously, that doesn’t include the Sheriff’s Office, which is 24-7, 365 days a year. And the Kane County Division of Transportation is going to be plowing streets, if necessary, whether it’s New Year’s Day or any other day, for that matter.
U.S. Post Offices
U.S. post offices generally close at noon on New Year’s Eve and are closed all day on New Year’s Day. Get the most up-to-date post office holiday information at this link.
Metra
Metra has its own set of holiday schedules, which generally mirror Metra’s Sunday schedules. Trains do run on the holidays, but pick out your line on this Metra link to find out exact schedules for your trains.
City Halls, Townships
In general, you’ll find that non-emergency departments for most municipal governments work a half-day on New Year’s Eve and are closed on New Year’s Day.
To find out for sure, I always recommend visiting your hometown unit of government’s home page. Kane County’s website contains links to City Hall, library, park district and other government office websites, and include a page of cities, villages and townships.
Garbage Pickup Days
Probably, we should have led with this subhead item, because it’s one of those things we often forget. Some garbage pickup days change during the holidays.
As an example, in my hometown of Geneva, garbage collection is the same for Thursday customers, but residents who have Friday service will have their trash picked up one day later than normal on the week of Dec. 28 due to the holidays.
So check your local municipal websites for more information. Generally, you find that kind of info on the home page or in the Public Works section of your community’s website.
Public and Private Schools
Obviously, public and private schools are closed for the New Year’s holiday. The Kane County Regional Office of Education website offers a great Public Schools Directory and Private Schools Directory, for more information.
Libraries, Park Districts
To find out more about which libraries and park districts are open or closed, visit the individual pages. Here’s a list of links to library districts and park districts in Kane County, once again courtesy of the Kane County, IL, website. Again, it’s not universal, but recreation centers often close at noon or 1 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, so check out the website before you head out for that New Year’s Eve workout.
Federal Government
Most federal government offices are closed for the half day on New Year’s Eve and the full day on New Year’s Day. That includes Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory here in Kane County.
Banks
Banks are closed on New Year’s Day. New Year’s Eve depends on the bank, but they’re often open for limited hours on the “eve.”
Kane County Connects
And, for the record, Kane County Connects will be “open” throughout the holiday, but we’re only posting newsletters this week on Monday through Wednesday, with the weekend edition on Saturday.
