Aurora police have secured felony charges against a 17-year-old North Aurora boy and a 21-year-old Naperville man and confiscated two guns in connection with separate incidents on Jan. 15 and 16.

The 17-year-old, whose name is not being released because of his age, was charged as a juvenile with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, not having a FOID card, and illegal possession of cannabis at around 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15. He was taken into custody without incident after the car in which he was riding was stopped for a traffic violation by Aurora Police Special Operations Group investigators in the area of Lake Street and Sullivan Road.

When they approached the vehicle after stopping it, the officers allegedly saw cannabis remnants on the 17-year-old’s clothing, and when asked, the boy proceeded to show officers he was in possession of additional marijuana, according to an Aurora Police Department news release.

The investigators then searched the vehicle for further contraband and with the help of an Aurora Police K-9, located a loaded pistol in the trunk they were able to tie back to the juvenile. The handgun, which was reported stolen out of Texas, was allegedly wrapped in a sock and hidden inside of a child restraint seat. The 17-year-old was transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles. More than 6 grams of cannabis were allegedly found in his possession.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Aurora man, was charged with improper lane use, and three female passengers — a 17-year-old from Wheaton, and two 16-year-olds: one from North Aurora and the other from Aurora — were released to their parents without charges.

Unlawful Use of a Weapon

In the other incident, Jeavil R. Walker, 21, of the 2900 block of White Thorn Circle, Naperville, was charged with a single count of unlawful use of a weapon by the DuPage County State’s Attorney, after the car in which he was riding was stopped after a shots fired call at around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.

While in a parking lot in the area of Montgomery Road and Highfield Court, an Aurora patrol officer heard a gunshot and then saw two vehicles: a sedan and an SUV travel from the area at a high rate of speed. The officer called for backup and pulled both vehicles over at Pointe Boulevard and Edinburgh Lane, police said. At the same time, a different responding officer was approached by a resident in the 2200 block of Highfield Court who said two men she didn’t know were pounding on her front door demanding a man she had no knowledge of, come outside. She said one of the men then produced a handgun, fired a single shot in the air and the men ran away.

As the investigation continued, it was found that Walker, who was seated in the SUV stopped by police, fit the description of the man who fired off the shot. A search of that vehicle turned up a handgun that police were able to allegedly tie back to Walker, the news release said.

Police found nothing hit by gunfire on Highfield. The driver of the SUV, a 20-year-old man from Lynwood, IL, was cited for driving without headlights. The other passengers in the vehicle: two 18-year-old men from Lansing and a 16-year-old boy from Plainfield, were released without charges after being questioned. The 19-year-old driver of the sedan was also released without being charged.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.
