Acting on increasing citizen complaints about drivers speeding along the Eola Road corridor, officers from the Aurora Police Department’s Community Policing Unit conducted a directed detail on Jan. 15 and stopped 35 cars, issuing 20 speeding tickets.

The officers ran the operation intermittently throughout the midday into the early evening on Eola south of Keating Drive and on McCoy Drive, west of Eola on the Far East side. It was in the same general area that a 49-year-old Aurora man was tragically killed by a 16-year-old boy who was drag racing another driver in December.

Police officials said the scope of the speeding problem was illustrated by several of the citations written, some of which were for motorists traveling more than 20 miles over the 35 mph posted speed limit.

“It’s equally frustrating that a lot the drivers weren’t surprised when they were pulled over because they knew they were speeding,” said Area Three Lt. Pete Inda. “We guarantee that we will continue to increase enforcement along Eola along with other roadways in the city where we receive complaints of excessive speed.”

Officers wrote 11 other traffic-related citations during the detail and arrested one person for no valid license, one for driving on a suspended license and one person found to be in possession of cannabis.
