Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day 2016 Monday in Kane County

Monday (Jan. 18, 2016) is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Kane County, IL, a day of volunteerism and a day to pay respect to one of America’s greatest leaders.

Kane County offices will be closed, as will federal offices, state offices, courts, public schools, post offices, stock markets and most banks. The Kane County Connects daily newsletter will take the holiday off and resume Tuesday, Jan. 19.

An evening with Aurora’s amazing youth and the incomparable poet Nikki Giovanni

Aurora’s MLK Planning Committee, in collaboration with the City of Aurora and Aurora’s African-American Heritage Advisory Board, hosts the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration. Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King, the event will feature performances from students and student groups, special awards for youth who serve the Aurora community and a keynote address by the one and only Nikki Giovanni.

One of the world’s most well-known poets, her works have been an anthem of peace, perseverance, and hope for millions around the world. From her early writings during the Civil Rights Movements of the 1960’s to her contemporary work that led her to become a nominee for a Grammy and finalist for the National Book Award, she is an author and professor who is rooted in the dream!

2016 Day of Service: Volunteer in Aurora on MLK Day

High School and Middle School students are encouraged to participate in Aurora’s Day of Service on Monday, January 18 at one of the participating service locations listed below. This is a great opportunity to help the community, make an impact and earn community service hours. Every student who participates will receive a special award at the MLK Celebration with Nikki Giovanni in the evening of MLK Day.

Each year, the City of Elgin Human Relations Commission takes great pride in presenting a weekend of activities celebrating the life of one of our country’s greatest civil rights leaders, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Schedule of Events

  • 8:30-10:30 a.m.Saturday, Jan. 16: Annual Prayer Breakfast at Elgin Community College — Tickets are available for purchase at City Hall, Cashiers’ Counter or in Human Resources.  Call 847-931-5607 to reserve tickets for purchase.  All tickets are $15.
  • 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17: Public Program at the Hemmens
  • 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18: Youth Day of Service at the Centre of Elgin
  • 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18: Community Food Drive
