Geneva’s Kayla Mickelsen Audition Wows ‘Idol’ Judges, Punches Golden Ticket to Hollywood

Move over Jeffery Austin, Kane County has another talent preparing to launch on reality-TV competition.

Kayla Mickelsen, described as a “weird, energetic, fun-loving vegan” from Geneva, IL, is going to Hollywood to compete in “American Idol,” according to the Chicago Tribune and NUVO, “Indy’s Alternative Voice” website.

NUVO says the Indiana band Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s helped Mickelsen unlock her golden ticket. Her audition song, shown in the YouTube video here, is “Broadripple is Burning,” which is one Margot’s songs.

Apparently, Mickelsen was back here in Kane County this weekend, playing a song or two for Jeffery Austin‘s show at the Arcada Theatre. Austin, of course, is the St. Charles North High School grad who punched his golden ticket by finishing in the final four of “The Voice.”

This is what Mickelsen posted on her Facebook page:

“GOING TO HOLLYWOOD. Thank you everyone for your support tonight. My dreams came true — singing my favorite song in a beautiful city and receiving three yeses from beautiful people … on a show I’ve watched since a little girl. I’m thankful for each and every one of you lovely darlings.”

Mickelsen’s website describes her this way:

“Kayla Mickelsen is an independent artist from Geneva, IL. She sings Indie rock and Indie pop, but enjoys incorporating folk and blues into her music. A few artists she looks up to are Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, and Courtney Barnett. Look out for this weird, nature-loving, energetic vegan on season XV of American Idol on Fox!”

This is the final season for American Idol, so producers are pulling out all the stops. The show’s star judges are Harry Connick, Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.

During auditions, Connick said, “I like you a lot. Nice job,” which you can see in the embedded YouTube video.

“American Idol” is on the Fox network and airs at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.
