Kane County Circuit Court Clerk Employee Charged With Theft

An employee of the Office of the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk is charged for stealing money she was responsible for as part of her employment.

Kelli D. Brackett, 39, most recently of the 15S block of Farnsworth Avenue, Aurora, and formerly of the 600 block of Hill Street, Sycamore, is charged with theft, a Class 2 felony, forgery, a Class 3 felony, official misconduct, a Class 3 felony, and tampering with records as a public official, a Class 3 felony.

Authorities allege that between Sept. 1, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015, Brackett knowingly stole more than $500 from the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s office and knowingly altered court records.

A warrant for Brackett’s arrest was issued and her bail was set at $5,000. Brackett surrendered this morning to the custody of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, was processed, posted $500 bond and was released.

Brackett’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 5, 2016, in front of Associate Judge Linda Abrahamson in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

If convicted of the most serious offense, Brackett could be sentenced to probation or between three and seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, and ordered to pay restitution to Kane County.

The charges against Brackett are not proof of guilt. Brackett is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
