Sheriff’s Office: Arrestee Hanged Himself in Bathroom

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its initial investigation into the death of arrestee Piotr Dutkiewicz, which occurred on Jan. 5, 2016.

Sheriff's badge SMALLDutkiewicz was brought into the intake section of the Adult Justice Center at approximately 11:30 a.m., he was screened and cleared by medical staff. While in the facility, he was interviewed regarding the incident during the eviction, and after the interview, sheriff’s deputies contacted the Kane County States Attorney’s Office for authorization for felony disorderly conduct charges, the Sheriff’s Office said in a Thursday (Jan. 14, 2016) news release.

Dutkiewicz was in the general waiting area of the intake section of the jail pending completion of the charging documents, when he asked permission and was allowed to use the bathroom, the release said. He was in the bathroom alone for about 17 minutes when corrections officers went to check on him and discovered that he had attempted to hang himself using a string from his sweatpants.

Officers and jail medical staff immediately began to do CPR. Dutkiewicz was transported by ambulance to Delnor Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy, and formal cause of death is pending a coroner’s report.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted a review of department policies and procedures and determined that there were no violations of polices or procedures. Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer has instructed correctional staff to do an additional review to determine if there are any policies, procedures, systems or other changes that may help prevent inmate suicides in the future.

“Sheriff Kramer wants to express his condolences to the family of Piotr Dutkiewicz,” the news release said.
