Best Paczki Places in Kane County? Here Are Your Recommendations
Like Leonard Nimoy in that old television show, Kane County Connects went “In Search Of” the best Paczki places in Kane County, IL.
We cooked up Thursday’s paczki article following a simple question posed by alert reader Sandy Kaczmarski: “Where’s the best place to get some paczkis for Paczki Day in the Fox Valley on Feb. 9?”
As we noted in the earlier article, Paczki Day — also known as Fat Tuesday — is a big deal in Chicago. There are interactive maps and websites and numerous feature stories about where to find the best paczki in the City of Broad Shoulders.
But the doughy delicacy is a little hard to find here, just 35 miles due west. So we asked for your advice and opinion. Here are some of the results:
Kane County Board member Kurt Kojzarek said go north, young man (at least north of the Kane County Government Center) if you want the best in Kane County.
“Coming from someone with 100 percent Polish ancestry, outside of my Grandma Kojzarek, I believe Country Doughnuts on Route 20 in Elgin has the best around,” Kojzarek said.
Several readers gave Country Doughnuts a hardy thumbs up.
Angel Bernahl gave this practical advice:
“My maiden name is Ciszewski, and I’ve tried every bakery in the area for Pączki,” she said. “None are anything special, but for the price and convenience I get Meijer.”
Let it be known that Meijer got more than one nod from readers, too. A quick Internet search reveals — and this is a non-judgmental “fun fact” from myfitnesspal.com — the apple paczki at Meijer clocks in at 453 calories.
Pat Szpekowski recommended Piece-a-Cake Bakery in East Dundee, and that was another bakery with multiple endorsements.
“But … I would drive to Continental Bakery in Mount Prospect, too,” she added.
Central Continental Bakery is hosting “Paczki Fest 2016” even as we speak.
Probably the most recommendations — and without doubt the most exclamation points — were garnered by Harner’s Bakery in Aurora. The related comments go like this:
- “Harners!”
- “Harner’s for sure!”
- “Harners!!!!!“
- And: “Harner’s in Aurora … to … die … for”
When visiting the Harner’s website, be sure to click on the “Specials” page for the best paczki deals.
Other recommendations were for Heidi’s in Geneva, Herb’s Bakery in Elgin and Dimples Donuts in Batavia.
Some of the comments didn’t have anything to do with the best paczki place per se.
Amanda Soltwisch asked: “Does anyone know if gluten-free paczki exist around here?” If you do know the answer, add a comment to the Kane County Connects Facebook post or email kanecountyconnects@gmail.com.
Finally and for the record comes this clarification from alert reader Suzanne Boncel Heronemus.
“And BTW, the singular of pączki is pączek.”
