Salmonella-Risk Recalls Continue — Macadamia Nuts, Pistachios Added to List
The Kane County Health Department has added two more Salmonella-risk recalls to the list of products that should be on Kane County consumers’ radar.
In addition to the Wild Blue Yonder granola recall and the Health Matters America flax seed and sprouted chia products recall announced in previous Health Department releases, Marathon Ventures is recalling macademia nuts and Country Life Natural Foods is recalling pistachio products. All are because of concerns that these products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Marathon Ventures Recalls Raw Macadamia Nuts
The Kane County Health Department is advising that Marathon Ventures, Inc., of Bellevue, NB, is voluntarily recalling various retail and bulk packages containing raw macadamia nuts as a precautionary measure because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
There have been no illnesses or injuries reported to date affiliated with these products. The recalled products were sold between July 2, 2015 and Feb. 3, 2016, through grocery, foodservice, other retail outlets, and direct mail orders via company website nationwide. The issue was brought to the company’s attention by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration following a Salmonella positive product found during routine sampling. More information about the recall can be found on this page of the FDA’s website.
More Pistachio Products Recalled
The Kane County Health Department is advising Country Life Natural Foods of Pullman, MI is recalling shelled raw pistachios, sold in 2-pound bags and 30-pound boxes, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported to date, but the products were distributed in retail stores in Illinois and other states, as well as through mail order and direct delivery. The 2 pound bags will bear the batch number 1357 in the lower left corner of the Country Life Natural Foods Label. The 30-pound boxes will bear the name “SAM International” lot number 102914, and best by date of April 29, 2016.
This recall was initiated when FDA contract testing laboratory analysis revealed the presence of Salmonella in one of the 19 samples obtained from SAM International. As a precaution, additional products are being recalled as they may be contaminated since they were packed from the master lot that came to the facility. Consumers who have purchased this recalled product should not consume it. They should return it to the point of purchase. Consumers with questions should call Country Life Natural Foods at 800-456-7694, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST Friday.
