If a groundhog emerges in Kane County on Tuesday, he’s likely to be covered in a “wintry mix” or soaked by rain — depending on what time of day he decides to take a peek.

The National Weather Service Chicago is predicting a nasty “wintry mix” that had been expected to bring 1 to 3 inches of snow but now looks to contain more rain than anything else.

“An expansive storm system will impact the Midwest tonight through early Wednesday,” the NWS-C says as of 3 p.m. Monday. “It appears windy and wet for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, with uncertainty remaining on how long any wintry precipitation lasts Tuesday morning, and if any light snow will accumulate late Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

“There also looks to be the chance for thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon.”

The timeline appears to be a slight chance of rain or freezing rain before 7 a.m., then a “wintry mix” of rain, snow and freezing rain between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., then rain after 9 a.m. Some thunder is also possible in the afternoon. It will be breezy, with an east wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.

The chance of precipitation is 100 percent, but “little or no ice accumulation” is expected, the NWS-C said Monday afternoon.

Still, not a very friendly commute for Kane County drivers.
