A 19- year-old Aurora man has been charged with three counts of armed robbery and two counts of aggravated battery after police posted surveillance photos of him on Facebook allegedly taking part in the robbery of a Far East convenience store and the battering of an employee and a patron last month.

According to an Aurora Police Department news release, officers secured the charges through the Will County State’s Attorney against Dangelo Williams of the 700 block of Liberty Street on March 1. He is presently in an Aurora hospital receiving care for issues unrelated to the robbery.

On Feb. 17, Aurora police posted surveillance photos asking for help in identifying the then, unknown man who, with an accomplice, robbed the 7-11 convenience store in the 2200 block of South Eola Road at around 11:35 p.m. Feb. 12. The photos allegedly depicting Williams were the only ones released. They likewise distributed the photos to Chicago-area media outlets. On the same day, detectives received two phone calls from people saying they had seen the Facebook post and that Williams was allegedly the suspect pictured. An ensuing investigation led to his alleged involvement in the crime.

Williams was arrested without incident on an unrelated warrant at his home on Feb. 26 by members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

It is alleged that Williams and his still-unknown accomplice, both of whom had their faces covered with bandanas, entered the business and approached the 45-year-old man who was working in the store. One of the suspects then produced a handgun before they demanded money and battered the clerk.

While fleeing the store after grabbing cash and cigarettes worth an undisclosed amount of money, Williams swung at an unsuspecting 20-year-old Aurora man who had entered the business and hit him in the ear but did not injure him badly enough to require medical treatment, police said.

The employee was treated and released from an Aurora hospital for non-life threatening physical injuries.

The only description police have of Williams’ alleged accomplice is that he was black, 5-foot-9-inches to 6 feet tall, weighing between 160 and 180 pounds and wearing dark clothing.
