Chicago Steel Players Will Help Restore Dick Young Forest Preserve!

Clear your schedule and join the Chicago Steel hockey team and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County for a Restoration Power Play!

Forest preserve volunteers, local hockey players and their host families need an assist from you from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at Dick Young Forest Preserve. Hockey players and volunteers will face off against non-native buckthorn and honeysuckle — plants that act like goons by crowding out native oak seedlings and wildflowers.

Screen Shot 2016-03-24 at 2.42.40 PMThe Chicago Steel are members of the United States Hockey League, the only Tier 1 Junior League in the United States.

“As the Fox Valley’s newest team, we look forward to this opportunity to serve our new community working with our partners and neighbors at the Forest Preserve District,” said Dan Lehv, president of Chicago Steel Hockey.

If unchecked, buckthorn and honeysuckle can heavily diminish the quality of a woodland. So the Steel’s willingness to help is greatly appreciated, said Monica Meyers, executive director of the Forest Preserve District.

“We think this is a great opportunity to partner with the Chicago Steel, help introduce them to the community, as well as improve Burton Woods, within Dick Young Forest Preserve,” she said. “Volunteers truly allow us to expand our restoration efforts, and we’re looking forward to a great event.”

All ages are welcome to participate in this fun, restoration workday.  After clearing non-native brush, the Steel players will stick around to meet fans and sign autographs.

Dick Young Forest Preserve is located at 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Don’t leave us shorthanded. Our goal is to clear the zone of invasive species! For more information on the Forest Preserve District or other restoration workdays, visit www.kaneforest.com. For more information on the Chicago Steel, visit www.chicagosteelhockeyteam.com.
