Yes, the Kane County Cougars are starring in their own musical.

Well, it’s not quite that — but the Cougars play a role in the plot and dialogue of The Guide to Being Single, which made its United Kingdom debut in February and was produced by the Starbuck Theatre Company.

The Cougars were contacted in 2015 by two Chicago-based writers, Alexi Kovin and Kaitlin Gilgenbach, who asked for the OK to include the team name in the musical. Gilgenbach wrote the play itself, and Kovin was responsible for the music and lyrics.

The Cougars eagerly assisted with costume for one of the main characters, Derek, who is a professional baseball player.

The Guide to Being Single tells the story of a pitcher who is traded from the New York Mets to the Chicago Cubs after having been tagged the Mets’ “problem player,” constantly fighting with teammates and creating physical altercations. Once in Chicago, he meets Jackie, a public relations professional, who is the publicist for the Cubs. As a side project, Jackie pens a guide to living a fulfilled life as a single person, which she shares with her friends. She and her friends arrive at the conclusion that life is easier if one does not date, and follow Jackie’s guide, but complications to Jackie’s single status arise after she meets Derek.

How do the Kane County Cougars fit into the plot? During Derek’s tenure playing for the Chicago Cubs, he is moved to the Minors. At the time the musical was written, the Kane County Cougars were the Class-A Affiliate of the Cubs.

“The Cougars are proud to have been included in the interesting story line and wish the writers success in future productions,” the Cougars organization said in a Friday news release.

The Starbuck Theatre Company opened the show at the Droitwich Norbury Theatre on Feb. 18 and extended it through the weekend. A review by the Love Midlands Theatre found the show to be incredibly charming with stellar performances by Sarah Pavlovs, who played Jackie, and Robert Dearn, who played Derek. The musical numbers brought the show to life and engaged the audience with their witty lyrics.

Pavlovs was the individual who reached out to the Kane County Cougars and has been kind enough to share photos from the performances and of Dearn sporting a Cougars hat, which features the Cougars’ new logo.

The Guide to Being Single was performed at the New York Musical Theater Festival in the summer of 2015. Its first production was in Milwaukee by the Underscore Theater Company in November of 2014.
