Kohl’s has announced that it will close its store at the Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles this June along with 17 other stores across the country.

Kohl’s at 3840 E. Main St., St. Charles, is one of the Charlestowne Mall’s anchor stores. It was the only Kohl’s store in Illinois on the list of 18 stores set to close in 2016.

The 18 stores represent less than 1 percent of Kohl’s total sales.

According to the news release, Kohl’s conducted a comprehensive review of all of the markets across the country to understand every element that contributes to making a store successful — from review of the other stores in each trade area, to the rent and expenses involved in operating any location, to how each customer base is evolving and adapting to the company’s integrated omnichannel efforts.

Kohl’s CEO Kevin Mansell said an important part of this decision was to ensure Kohl’s “could take care of every impacted store associate.”

“We are proud to share every eligible store associate will be offered the opportunity to work at a nearby Kohl’s or, if they choose, can accept a competitive severance package,” Mansell said. “On average, Kohl’s stores employ approximately 80 to 100 associates.”

Kohl’s has three other Kane County locations, at 251 N. Randall Road in Batavia, 350 Randall Road in South Elgin and 3000 Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee.

“Kohl’s customers can continue to receive the same exceptional customer service, amazing products and incredible savings at surrounding store locations, as well as on Kohls.com and Kohl’s mobile app. Customers can locate their nearest Kohl’s location using Kohl’s Store Locator on Kohls.com,” the news release said.

At the same time, Kohl’s is seeking innovative ways to drive sales. This year, seven new, smaller-format Kohl’s stores are planned to open in various regions around the country. Kohl’s will add two additional Off/Aisle pilot stores in Wisconsin and open 12 Fila outlet stores, marking Kohl’s first entry into the outlet space.
