Shaw Media Acquires Elburn Herald, Will Convert Kane County Chronicle to Hyper-Local Weeklies
Shaw Media announced Wednesday (March 23, 2016) that it has acquired the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald and will change the five-day-a-week Kane County Chronicle to a hyper-local weekly newspaper in mid-April.
Shaw will also change the Chronicle to mail delivery when it converts the Chronicle to a weekly print publication.
J. Tom Shaw, general manager of Shaw Media’s Suburban Group and president of the company, announced in a letter to readers that the Kane County Chronicle will be delivered each Thursday via U.S. mail as one of three local editions focused on the communities of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. The Kane County Chronicle presently publishes five days a week, from Tuesday through Saturday.
The change will take place starting April 14.
Shaw Media has comprehensive website, a breaking news text-message service, a variety of social media platforms and publishes a daily e-newsletter every Monday through Saturday.
“In order to better serve our communities, it is necessary for us to adapt to changes in technology and consumer preferences,” Shaw’s letter said. “We have determined that the combination of a great weekly printed newspaper and a comprehensive local website is the best option for now and the future.”
Starting in April, subscribers of the five weeklies also will receive Kane County Magazine each month. Kane County Magazine is the local lifestyle magazine of the Tri-Cities, featuring dining, fashion and the social scene.
Last summer, Shaw Media added the Kendall County Record, Oswego Ledger, Plano Record and Sandwich Record as part of a strategy to expand its weekly newspaper network in suburban Chicago.
“With the launch of these new weekly St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Elburn, and Sugar Grove newspapers, we will increase our daily coverage of local news, photos and videos online at www.KCChronicle.com,” Shaw said.
