Aurora police have secured felony charges through the DuPage County State’s Attorney on a 17-year-old Naperville boy who allegedly brought a gun to the Far East Side high school he attends on Monday.

The boy, a student at Metea Valley High School, 1801 North Eola Road, is in the custody of juvenile authorities on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. More than one Metea student brought the boy’s alleged possession of the unloaded handgun to the attention of authorities at around 1:40 p.m., May 2. School administrators and the Aurora Police School Resource Officer assigned to Metea immediately located the student and found the semiautomatic handgun in the boy’s backpack. There was no ammunition found either in the boy’s possession or in his locker or vehicle.

The youth did not make any threats toward anyone at the school and told authorities he had no intention of using the weapon. However, he could offer no explanation as to why he brought the gun, which is believed to belong to one of his parents, to school. No further charges are expected.

Both the Aurora police and District 204 officials credited Metea students for their quick actions in bringing the situation to the attention of administrators.
