Immediate Weight Restriction, Repairs Under Way for Silver Glen Road Bridge Over Otter Creek

The Kane County Division of Transportation has set a 3-ton weight limit for vehicles using the Silver Glen Road Bridge over Otter Creek, located 880 feet east of Burr Road in the Village of South Elgin, while the county embarks on near-term and long-term bridge repairs.

The 3-ton weight restriction is effective immediately and will remain in effect until interim repairs are complete. All vehicles using the Silver Glen Road Bridge over Otter Creek are required to follow the 3-ton weight restriction. Motorists with vehicles that exceed the specified limits are required to find alternate routes.

Bridge inspectors recently presented their findings to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Central Bridge Office. IDOT officials reviewed the situation and endorsed KDOT’s recommendation to set up the 3-ton weight restriction.

KDOT officials say the 3-ton weight restriction will add a level of safety until the interim bridge repair is complete.

Engineering is under way for an interim bridge repair, scheduled for completion in late summer or early fall of 2016. KDOT officials recommend the interim work because of the length of time it takes to complete a full-scale bridge rehabilitation/replacement.

Meanwhile, KDOT staffers have initiated the process to complete the long-term rehabilitation/replacement of the bridge. Using federal funds, a bridge rehabilitation/replacement improvement typically takes several years in order to complete Phase I engineering, Phase II engineering and, if necessary, land acquisition before the actual construction can take place.

Any questions or concerns may be directed to Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation – project implementation, at (630) 584-1170. For all Kane County Division of Transportation traffic advisories, please refer to the KDOT website at KDOT Traffic Alerts.
