The Fabyan and Stearns Road bridge inspections are part of the Kane County Division of Transportation’s annual routine inspections. This year, KDOT plans to inspect about 51 structures and bridges throughout the county.

Kane County is responsible for inspecting and maintaining 65 bridges. KDOT must follow National Bridge Inspection Standards outlined by the Federal Highway Administration. The primary purpose of the FHWA bridge inspection program is to locate and evaluate existing bridge deficiencies to ensure the safety of the traveling public. All public bridges more than 20 feet in length are required to be inspected and inventoried.

Qualified personnel must typically inspect bridges every two years and have their findings submitted to the Illinois Department of Transportation for inclusion in the state and national databases. Bridges found to be deficient are monitored.  Some structures may require a reduction of loads, and ultimately, prompt programming of funds towards a rehabilitation or replacement improvement.

Questions and concerns may be directed to Mike Zakosek, Kane County Division of Transportation, at (630) 584-1170.
