Last month’s Kane County recycling event was so popular, Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland is making a few tweaks to make it easier and safer for folks to get through the lines for the next event, scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14, at the branch court at 540 S Randall in St. Charles.

“The detailed organization of this event and the more than 50 volunteers and staff working to guide and unload your vehicles help to make it as smooth as possible,” Jarland said. “However, due to the incredible volume of TVs being recycled these days, this event is expected to have increased traffic and wait times of up to one-hour.”

Because of recent closings of electronic recycling drop-offs at the public works departments in Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles and West Dundee, Kane County’s monthly recycling event is the last remaining option to recycle your electronics free of charge.

About 165,000 pounds of electronics were recycled at the April 9 event. During that four-hour time period, about 1,600 residents unloaded their recyclables, filling eight (53-foot) semi-trailers with electronics consisting mainly of TVs.

“That’s a throughput of about four cars served per minute!” Jarland said. “So we are truly moving as fast as we can.”

On May 14, Jarland recommends that you arrive no later than 11 a.m. to get in the line.

“We will have to cut the line off at some point in order to serve those in the line before the event ends,” she said.

The good news is that the May 14 event is for electronics and books only. This is NOT a document shredding event!

That said, Jarland has a few new plans for ingress and egress as well as a few guidelines that the public should understand. The map above gives a good illustration of the route, and the bullet lists below give you and idea of what to do and where to go.

Traffic Will Be Guided, Policy Enforced

• Please plan to approach from the south and line up along the east shoulder of Randall Road.
• There will be one entrance to the event and one exit. You will enter the second turn-in on the right after Prairie Street. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the St. Charles Police Department will have traffic officers guiding you.
• Do not attempt to enter through the entrances off of Prairie or through the Colonial Café parking lot. You will not get through. Those entrances are for plaza businesses only.
• Please familiarize yourself with the event map so that you can see the plan.

Recycling Guidelines Limit Number of TVs

• Kane County will accept a maximum of three TVs per car of any type, size, or age.
• This event is for Kane County residents only!
• This event is NOT FOR BUSINESSES: Businesses, institutions, schools and non-profits may not use this event, but must contract for recycling services from a certified electronics recycler.
• Please do not arrive early. The event is from 8 a.m. to noon.
• This event is presently free of charge.

Location Likely to Change, Starting in June

Due to the burgeoning attendance and overwhelming success of this monthly event, Kane County is exploring alternative locations and will likely announce a new location for the June event and beyond. Please keep an eye on Kane County Connects and the Kane County Recycles website for updates at www.countyofkane.org/recycling.

Future Events

The Kane County Electronics Recycling collection events will be held on the second Saturday of each month through November of 2016 on these dates: May 14, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, and Nov. 12. Electronics and books will be accepted at all events.
