Beginning July 5, 2016, cashless tolling will be coming to the Illinois Route 390 Tollway from Lake Street to I-290. This is the first, all-electronic roadway on the Illinois Tollway system.

Tollway officials say the new system will provide for a safer, more efficient and seamless method of collecting tolls from customers.

Toll collection equipment over the traffic lanes reads the I-PASS transponder on the windshield and automatically collects tolls. Drivers continue at highway speeds without the need to slow down or stop to pay at a toll. Tolls are lower on the Illinois Route 390 Tollway because they are assessed more frequently than other parts of the system. This allows for greater sensitivity for shorter trips and helps local communities provide congestion relief on adjacent roads.

I-PASS users always pay the lowest toll rates available, 50 percent less than those who do not have an I-PASS and must pay online. Those without an I-PASS can get a transponder at an I-PASS Customer Service Center or any Jewel-Osco location. For more information, visit www.illinoistollway.com.

New signs being installed along Illinois Route 390

Leading up to July 5, 2016, customers will see signage installation along the roadway to inform customers of the new, all-electronic system.

Road closures will be scheduled to install new signage over the road on Illinois Route 390. The Illinois Tollway is committed to using traffic shifts and shoulders to keep as many lanes open as possible while work is underway to prepare for tolling. When possible, lane closures will be scheduled during overnight and off-peak hours to minimize the impact to drivers.

So, Get I-PASS and Get Going!

As Illinois Tollway implements the all-electronic tollway on the Illinois Route 390 Tollway, a lot of folks might be wondering how to get an I-PASS and get going.

I-PASS customers can drive on the Illinois Route 390 Tollway and benefit from a 50 percent discount on tolls. Transponders need to be mounted correctly. While multiple vehicles can be linked to an I-PASS account, each vehicle needs a separate transponder.

Don’t have an I-PASS? Customers can get a transponder in person, online, by phone or by mail. The nearest I-PASS Customer Service Center is at the O’Hare Oasis on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). In addition, nearly 200 Jewel-Osco locations in Illinois sell I-PASS transponders including:

• Carol Stream – 750 W. Army Trail Road
• Elk Grove Village – 20 Biesterfield Road
• Glendale Heights – 2164 Bloomingdale Road
• Schaumburg – 1151 S. Roselle Road and 2501 Schaumburg Road
• Streamwood – 217 Irving Park Road

Jewel-Osco applies a $2.90 service charge per transponder. Activation is required for transponders; instructions are included in the transponder box.
