Kane County Food Drive ‘Connects,’ With $9,180 in Donations, 1,100 Pounds of Food for Needy

The generosity of Kane County employees and citizens and a $5,000 check from the Kane County Sheriff’s Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #14 has made this month’s food drive one of the most successful in the county’s history.

In total, 1,100 pound of food were collected during the campaign, which provided food drop-off bins at the Kane County Government Center and other Kane County locations as well as online donation opportunities from June 6 to June 24, 2016. In addition to the food, $9,180 in monetary donations were collected, including $4,180 from the Kane County Human Resources Department’s fundraising efforts and another $5,000 check from FOP Lodge #14.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen signed the check and along with other volunteers helped load the Northern Illinois Food Bank truck.

As a followup to the food drive, the county will host a Northern Illinois Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 4 at the Kane County Government Center. The donations raised this year will benefit 29 area food pantries and will help subsidize the mobile pantry.

Food Drive 2016DSC01289Kate Thomas, special events and promotions coordinator for the food bank, said this year’s donation from Kane County was one of the best of the summer season, and the $5,000 check from the Fraternal Order of Police was a small windfall in and of itself.

“Through this (FOP) check alone, we will be able to give $40,000 back to the community,” she said.

Kevin Williams, president of the FOP #14 Lodge, said the organization has grown and changed over the years.

“We strive to show that we are more than just police officers,” he said. “This year, FOP Lodge #14 wanted to do more to help the people in our communities, so we picked two organization that we felt could use some assistance: the Northern Illinois Food Bank and Senior Service Associates Inc.”

This is the second year in which the Kane County has held its food drive in June. The purpose of the event, titled “Kane County Connects Employees With the Community,” is to raise money and food for needy families in Kane County and to raise awareness that hunger affects our Kane County communities every year.

Kane County Sheriff’s FOP Lodge #14 was chartered on April 1, 1966. At that time, the primary goals were work related. Later, FOP #14 became devoted to fraternal and community activities only.
