What’s Closed, What’s Open in Kane County on the Fourth of July 2016
Independence Day is celebrated on Monday, July 4, 2016, with a lot of businesses and institutions taking a well-deserved day off.
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.
That’s absolutely true in our neck of the woods.
Kane County
Most Kane County offices are closed. Obviously, that doesn’t include the Sheriff’s Office, which is 24-7, 365 days a year.
U.S. Post Offices
U.S. post offices are closed, as well.
Postal Service facilities will be closed for retail transactions on Monday, July 4, in observance of the 4th of July holiday. There will be no regular mail delivery and limited collection runs will be conducted. While the Postal Service is observing Independence Day on Monday, there are still easy ways to access stamps and other mailing services over the holiday weekend.
More than 2,500 self-service kiosks are available in postal lobbies around the nation, averaging more than $1.6 million each day in stamps sales, package acceptance and post office box payments. Kiosks users can weigh and ship packages, buy postage, mail letters, and look up ZIP Codes. Special services like certified mail and insurance are also available.

Metra
On Friday, July 1, early departure service will be in effect on most lines. Certain lines will hold the last train of the night until 1 a.m. to accommodate riders attending downtown events. - On Sunday, July 3, a Sunday schedule will be in effect. There will be select UP extra trains, and other lines will have expanded seating capacity. The last trains of the night will once again be held until 1 a.m. on most lines. See July 1-4 Summary or Union Pacific July 2-4.
- On Monday, July 4, a Sunday schedule will be in effect. There will be UP extra trains again, and other lines will have expanded seating capacity. Certain lines will adjust outbound departure times to 11 p.m. to accommodate riders attending downtown events and fireworks. See July 1-4 Summary or Union Pacific July 2-4.
Pace Suburban Bus Service
On Monday, July 4, 2016, the following Pace routes will operate on a Sunday schedule: 208, 215, 223, 250, 270, 290, 301, 303, 305, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 313, 315, 317, 318, 322, 330, 332, 349, 350, 352, 353, 356, 357, 359, 364, 366, 379, 381, 383, 384, 386, 565, 568, 571, 606, 770, 771, 772.
Additionally, the Schaumburg Trolley, Rosemont Entertainment Circulator, and express service to Wrigley Field will operate as published.
No other service will operate unless otherwise noted. All routes will resume operating on a weekday schedule on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.

City Halls, Townships
Non-emergency departments for municipal governments are closed.

Garbage Pickup Days
In general, garbage pickup days are delayed by a day from your usual garbage-pickup day, but check your local municipality’s public works site to be sure. Once again: cities, villages and townships.
Public and Private Schools
Obviously, public and private schools are closed.

Libraries, Park Districts
Most libraries often are closed on Independence Day.

Most federal government offices are closed. That includes Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory here in Kane County.

The Federal Reserve is closed, so most banks are, as well.

And, for the record, Kane County Connects will be “open” throughout the holiday, but we won’t be posting an e-newsletter on Independence Day, Monday, July 4.
