74-Year-Old St. Charles Woman Killed, 2 Injured in Route 64 Crash

A 74-year-old St. Charles woman died Thursday (July 7, 2016) afternoon after a multi-vehicle collision on IL Route 64 west of St. Charles.

Janice Willenborg was pronounced deceased at Delnor Hospital, and two other drivers were injured in the crash, which closed Route 64 near Peck Road for more than three hours.

Sheriff's badge SMALLAccording to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release, sheriff’s deputies and Campton Hills police were dispatched at around 3:45 p.m. to a traffic crash with injuries on IL Route 64 west of Peck Road in unincorporated St Charles Township.

The initial investigation indicates that a Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Chloe White, 20, of Elgin was traveling east on Route 64 and stopped behind an unknown vehicle that was waiting to turn north onto Cibis Road, and a Toyota Highlander driven by Willenborg was stopped behind the Mitsubishi.

A Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Mark Vogtman, 36, of Sugar Grove, also traveling east on Route 64, struck the rear of Willenborg’s Toyota. The Toyota then went into the westbound lane of Route 64, where it was struck by a Freightliner semi-tractor truck driven by Robert Duff, 55, of Rockdale, IL.

Willenborg was transported to Delnor Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.  White and Duff were also transported to Delnor Hospital with apparent minor injuries. Vogtman was uninjured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No citations had been issued at the time of the news release.

Route 64 was closed between Peck Road and Arbor Creek Road until about 7 p.m. while the crash was investigated.
