Algonquin Suspends Styrofoam Recycling, Closes Site Effective Immediately

The Styrofoam collection site at the Algonquin Public Works Facility is closed, effective immediately.

village of algonquin logo“Unfortunately, due to negative market conditions for recycled Styrofoam, the village of Algonquin must suspend the Styrofoam recycling program,” village officials said in a Thursday, July 28, 2016, news release. “The outlets that were taking the densified Styrofoam are no longer accepting the material.”

Algonquin officials thanked area resident Ken Santowski for providing free recycling of Styrofoam for several years.

“Mr. Santowski’s hard work and dedication kept untold amounts of Styrofoam out of the landfill,” the village said. “The collection of Styrofoam was graciously made available to residents, at no cost, by Mr. Santowski and the volunteers who helped him collect and transport the Styrofoam.”

According to the news release, the village is exploring other outlets for Styrofoam and will collect it again if a market can be found for recycling and reusing the product.

“Until further notice, all Styrofoam will have to be disposed with your regular garbage,” officials said.
