An Elgin man has been sent to prison for his role in a gang fight two years ago.

Jerome M. Murry, 27, of the 200 block of Chaparral Circle, Elgin, was sentenced Friday (July 15, 2016) by Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Murry pleaded guilty May 23, 2016, to mob action, a Class 4 felony.

Kane County prosecutors presented evidence that at about 8 p.m. Aug. 24, 2014, a pair of Murry’s fellow gang members were leaving a store in the 100 block of Kimball Street when they encountered two members of a rival gang. The men engaged in a brief squabble before Murry’s friends left to find him. The pair returned with Murry, entered the store and began to fight. No one was seriously injured.

During the hearing, Tegeler cited Murry’s extensive criminal history. Since 2006 Murry has been convicted at least 18 times for a variety of violent and nuisance offenses. Three of the offenses were felonies and 15 were misdemeanors. Murry has served three previous prison terms. Murry was eligible for an extended prison term because of his criminal history.

According to Illinois law, Murry is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He receives credit for 209 days served in custody.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Dawn Troost.
