Rare Vietnam War Re-Enactment Event Set for July 22-24 in Elgin
It’s not unusual during the summer in Kane County to see a variety of war reenactments, recalling events and sharing history from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I or World War II.
But it is rare to see a reenactment event of the Vietnam War.
That will happen this summer as the 2/327th Vietnam Re-Enactment Group holds the first annual “Return to the A Shau” Vietnam public event from Friday, July 22, to Sunday, July 24, at Camp Big Timber in Elgin.
The event is open to all Vietnam-period impressions and will offer living history and static displays, as well as public battles.
“We are hoping that this event will become a staple, stand-alone event for the Vietnam era,” organizers say on the reenactment group’s Facebook page and EventBrite post. “While there are several events in the Midwest that offer Vietnam displays and battles in conjunction with WWII, there are few Vietnam-only events in this area. Come out and show your support.”
The courage and experiences of Vietnam veterans often are overlooked and underappreciated. Among the recent local efforts to remember the valor of those troops is coming to fruition in 2017, when Oswego will host the Vietnam Moving Wall. Officials announced on Flag Day this year that the Moving Wall will be on display from June 29 to July 3, 2017.
For the “Return to the A Shau” reenactment, re-enactors and veterans will display authentic uniforms, gear and weapons from both sides of the war. Battle re-enactments will take place at noon and 3 p.m. daily. The event will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 23, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2016.
