St. Charles Teen Charged With Armed Robbery in Elgin

A St. Charles teenager has been charged with armed robbery of a gas station.

According to a news release from the Elgin Police Department, Elgin officers responded at around 8:07 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, to the Circle K Gas Station, 460 S. McLean Boulevard, for a reported armed robbery. Officers met with the store clerk, who reported that a male subject entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded cash, then fled on foot.

The victim was not injured during the incident.

Detectives from Elgin’s Major Investigations Division conducted an investigation into the incident and identified 18-year-old Ryan J. Witkus, of the 200 block of N. Tyler Road, St. Charles, as a suspect.

Witkus turned himself in to the Elgin Police Department on July 15. The facts of the case were reviewed with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, and Witkus was charged with attempted armed robbery with a firearm, a Class 1 felony.

On July 16, 2016, Witkus was transported to the Kane County Jail, where he appeared in Kane County Court for a bond hearing.

The Elgin Police Department reminds the public that an arrest is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
