As Child Victim Testifies, Campton Hills Man Stops Trial to Plead Guilty
A Campton Hills man on trial for sexually assaulting a child over a 10-year period chose to plead guilty last week as the victim was testifying.
David L. Wright, 54, of the 43W block of McDonald Road, Campton Hills, on Aug. 16 agreed to a sentence of 23 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to two counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony.
The plea includes an order of protection that prohibits Wright from having any contact with the victim for five years after his release from prison.
Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., accepted the plea.
The victim had been on the witness stand for about 30 minutes emotionally describing the crimes committed against her when Wright without warning chose to plead guilty, ending the trial.
Prosecutors stated during the plea hearing that between March 2005 and April 2015, Wright repeatedly sexually assaulted a child he knew. The victim was younger than 13 years old when the assaults began.
In addition to the prison sentence, Wright must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act.
According to the Elburn Police Department, Wright was an Elburn police officer at the time he was charged.
“I cannot overstate the tremendous courage shown by this victim since this case was reported. Her life has been unimaginably altered, and we are proud of her willingness to speak out and confront her abuser,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.
Wright receives credit for 478 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $500,000 bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Debra Bree, who is the executive director of the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, and Kane County ASA Lori Schmidt, who is assigned to the CAC.
