Mobile Food Pantry, VA Mobil Medical Unit Coming to Kane County Thursday, Aug. 4
Kane County’s annual food drive wasn’t finished this June, when county employees collected more than $9,100 and 1,100 pounds of food donations as part of their annual food drive.
The donations have made possible a mobile food pantry from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016. And as an added bonus, the VA hospital’s mobile unit will be on hand from 8:30 a.m. to noon that same day at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.
The mobile food pantry is hosted by the Northern Illinois Food Bank and sponsored by Kane County employees, and food will be supplied on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. A registration table will be open during the event, and food is free to low-income people in need. Residents are asked to bring bags or boxes in which to carry food.
“Food pantries in Kane County have been contacted, and the response is great,” said Susan Brown, who is helping to coordinate the employee-led Kane County effort. “If you live in Kane County and don’t have enough to eat, this mobile food pantry can help.”
The food pantry is part of a summer-long effort to give back to the community. Formerly known as the “Holiday Helping Hands” initiative, employees changed the theme to “Kane County Connects Employees With the Community” and the timing of the event, in order to raise awareness that hunger affects Kane County residents year-round — not just during the holidays.

The mobile medical unit of the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital is equipped to register veterans for VA heath care on the spot and will be in the back parking lot at the Government Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. New and existing enrollees can see a registered nurse for immunizations, a social worker for support and a provider for an annual medical exam.
