UPDATE 11 A.M. WEDNESDAY, AUG. 3, 2016
Aurora police have charged 48-year-old Alfredo Soto of the 700 block of Iowa Ave in Aurora with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of North Aurora resident Martiniano Alvarez, 31, of the 100 block of Laurel Drive, North Aurora.
At about 6:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, Aurora police responded to the Latin American Club in the 1300 block of Dearborn Avenue and located Alvarez just inside one of the entrances, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. According to the preliminary investigation, Soto and two of his friends were drinking at the bar and engaged in what appeared to be a normal conversation with the Alvarez, who entered the establishment sometime after the other three men.
Soto was then seen getting up from the bar and walking toward the front door when he told the victim to come with him. When Alvarez walked toward the door, Soto allegedly produced a handgun and shot the Alvarez several times. The suspect then left the bar, got into his white pickup truck and fled westbound.
Soto was taken into custody at his home in a relatively short period of time after the shooting. His quick arrest was due to the immediate response of police and investigators, working together with assisting Aurora citizens.
Despite medical efforts at a local hospital, Alvarez eventually succumbed to his injuries. The motive for shooting is still under investigation.
