When Can Police Use Force? Elgin PD Answers Questions in Aug. 30 Presentation

In the wake of public concern about police action in Chicago and other big cities, the Elgin Police Department is taking a proactive step to help citizens better understand police use of force.

Elgin Police Use of ForceA community presentation ā€” set for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, at the Centre of Elgin‘s Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way ā€” will provide an overview of the use of force options available to Elgin officers, state law guiding police use of force, police department policies, and how deployment efforts are made.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the presentation is designed to educate the community as to how the department uses training to properly deploy force options.

“In today’s environment, the Elgin Police Department recognizes that it is important for our citizens to know how and why Elgin police officers may have to use force and what options are available,” he said. “This will be a great interactive discussion, and we hope many residents are able to attend this event.”

There is no fee to attend the presentation.

A parent or guardian must accompany participants under the age of 18. Cmdr. Ana Lalley may be contacted at 847-289-2761 with any questions.
