4 Deadlines You Should Keep in Mind for Nov. 8 Elections
With the presidential election campaign in full swing, and with a debate series set to start later this month, it’s time for Kane County residents to start getting ready to vote.
The following are some of the deadlines you should keep in mind as the Nov. 8 election date draws nearer, courtesy of the Kane County Clerk’s Office Elections website. For Aurora voters, be sure to visit the Aurora Election Commission website.
2016 General Election
- Election Day: Tuesday, Nov 8, 2016
- Last Day to Register to Vote: Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016
Grace Period Voter Registration
People who do not register to vote by Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, may use the grace-period registration to register to vote. Grace-period voting will be offered at the Kane County Clerk’s Office beginning Oct. 12, 2016, through election date, Nov. 8, 2016.
The Kane County Clerk’s Office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located in Building B of the Kane County Government Center at 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.
Be Prepared to Register to Vote
Voter registration opened March 17, 2016.
A person can register to vote by mail or in person. You must provide two acceptable forms of ID when registering. Registering by mail requires the completion of the mail in registration form provided on the Kane County Clerk’s web page and two acceptable forms of ID.
You can also register online by visiting this page of the Illinois State Board of Elections website.
Information on Acceptable forms of ID’s (Public Act 83-0258) can be found on the Kane County Clerk’s election website, www.kanecountyelections.org.
Early Voting
Kane County residents can’t vote often, but they can vote early at several locations.
There are five “permanent” early-voting locations in Kane County. Voters can cast an early ballot at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, starting Thursday, Sept. 29. You can vote early at four other permanent locations, starting Oct. 24. The addresses are:
- The Kane County Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave.
- The Kane County Branch Court Conference Center, 530 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.
- Carpentersville Fire Station No. 3, 5000 Sleepy Hollow Road, Carpentersville.
- Gail Borden Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
- Elgin Township Office, 729 S. McLean Boulevard, Elgin.

You can vote early at 12 additional government and nongovernment locations at various time periods prior to the election. They include:
Vote By Mail
Residents of Kane County who will be out of town or have other extenuating circumstances — military service men and women, incapacitated voters, nursing home voters, hospitalized voters and others — may vote by mail.

You may request a vote by mail ballot to be mailed to you. The last day the Clerk’s Office can mail you a ballot is five days prior to the election. To request a vote by mail, either:
- Print out and complete an application to vote, for General Election Nov. 8, 2016, and then mail the completed form to Kane County Clerk, 719 S. Batavia Ave, Bldg B, Geneva, IL 60134,
- Or call the Kane County Clerk’s Office at (630) 232-5990.
Mailed ballots for Military/Overseas voters will be issued between Friday, Sept. 23, and Monday, Oct. 31, 2016.
For all other vote-by-mail ballots will be issued between Thursday, Sept. 29, and Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, according to the Clerk’s Office website.
