Chicago Man Charged With Murder After Sept. 7 Fatal Shooting in Carpentersville
A Chicago man is charged with murder in a Sept. 7, 2016, Carpentersville armed robbery that left his accomplice, 37-year-old Kenyon Slater of Chicago, shot to death.
Bobby Heard, 32, last known address of the 5200 block of South Honore Street, Chicago, is charged with felony murder, and armed robbery, a Class X felony.
A warrant for Heard’s arrest was issued Sept. 17, 2016, and his bail was set at $3 million.
Heard was taken into custody Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, in St. Louis, MO, by the U.S. Marshal Service.
As if Friday, according to Carpentersville police, Heard is in custody in the Greene County Jail in Springfield, MO. Heard awaits extradition to Kane County, IL, where his initial court appearance has not been determined.
The Kane County State’s Attorney and Carpentersville Police Department allege that at about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7, 2016, Heard and Slater, both armed with handguns, entered a business in the 1600 block of Ravine Lane, Carpentersville, restrained two people who were working in the store and demanded cash.
Heard and Slater took electronic equipment and cash, and Heard struck one of the victims in the head with a handgun before they fled the store. One of the victims immediately freed himself, retrieved a handgun, ran out of the store into the parking lot and shot and killed Slater. Heard fled in a vehicle driven by a third, unknown suspect.
Illinois law states that a person commits felony murder if the murdered individual was killed in the course of another felony if the other felony was an inherently violent crime or the attempt to commit an inherently violent crime. Inherently violent crimes include, but are not limited to, armed robbery.
If convicted of the most serious offense, Heard would face a minimum sentence of 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the case or the second suspect should contact Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Paul Brandt at 224-293-1676.
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon thanked Carpentersville Police Chief Mike Kilbourne and his team at the Carpentersville Police Department, and the U.S. Marshal Service for their work in the case.
“It’s good to know that we can count on multiple agencies to work together to solve crimes,” he said.
Kilbourne also praised the interdepartmental cooperation.
“I’m pleased that we were able to identify this suspect so quickly,” he said. “Thanks to my staff here at the Carpentersville Police Department, the U.S. Marshal Service, and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance in identifying and arresting this suspect.”
The charges against Heard are not proof of guilt. Heard is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
