The iPhone 7 might be grabbing a lot of headlines, but Kane County’s new electronics recycling program rollout is gaining nearly as much momentum and positive vibes, with the second of three electronics recycling drop-off sites open for business this week in South Elgin, and the monthly recycling program set to resume Saturday.

South Elgin Open For Drop-Off!

Kane County’s second recycling drop-off spot opened this week at 735 Martin Drive South Elgin, following the successful opening of the first daily drop-off location at 517 Fabyan Parkway in Batavia on Sept. 12.

Drop-off hours of operation at both of the above locations are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The village of West Dundee drop-off at 900 Angle Tarn will reopen Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, and will be open Monday through Friday during slightly earlier hours — from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Great Timing, Partnership Made South Elgin Site Happen

The village of South Elgin moved out of its old public works building earlier this month into its new building at 1000 Bowes Road in South Elgin.

“The timing could not have been better!” Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said. “They were moving out and leaving a vacant parking lot next to the old building, which we are now able to use as a public electronics drop-off location.”

Jarland said working with the village of South Elgin has been a refreshing experience and an example of good government.

“I commend the village administrator, the president, and the board for their friendly welcome of the idea and proposal, and their well-considered agreement to this partnership to offer Kane County residents a convenient and central location for electronics recycling,” she said.

South Elgin Village Administrator Steven Super said the partnership is simply part of the village’s “at your service” philosophy.

“The village is very happy to be in the position to partner with the county to offer this much needed service,” he said.

Monthly Event Is Back!

On Nov. 12, the county will accept electronics and books, as well as liquid latex paint (fee applies) and free confidential document shredding.

After a three-month hiatus, the Kane County Recycles monthly event is back, from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Sept. 24, at the same friendly and familiar location at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles. The county will be accepting electronics and books at this event.

Please note the information on fees for TVs and monitors below and pay online in advance if possible to help Kane County keep the lines moving smoothly. Also if possible, use the new daily drop-off locations to avoid the line altogether!

The following events are back on the regularly scheduled “second Saturday” of the month:

• On Oct. 8, Kane County will accept electronics and books.
• On Nov. 12, the county will accept electronics and books, as well as liquid latex paint (fee applies) and free confidential document shredding.

Fees for Recycling TVs and Monitors

There will be a fee for TVs and computer monitors — both tube and flat screen — at all drop-off locations and the event. The great news is that all other acceptable electronic items can be dropped off for free.

It is recommended that you pay online in advance and bring your receipt to any drop-off or the collection event, though the fee may be paid onsite by exact cash or card.

The fee is $25 for screens 20 inches and under (measured diagonally) and $35 for screens 21 inches and over.

The fee that you pay for screened equipment goes directly to the county’s contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals.
