UPDATE: Sheriff’s Office Locates St. Charles Man Missing Since Saturday
Kane County sheriff’s deputies have found Dane Hagerty, the 43-year-old St Charles man who had been missing since Saturday.
Sheriff’s Office Administrator Pat Gengler said via email Tuesday that Hagerty, whose vehicle had been discovered Saturday in the parking lot of the Otter Creek Wetlands on Crane Road in unincorporated St. Charles, was found early today (Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016) by a sheriff’s deputy patrolling near the South Elgin Fire Station at 2055 McDonald Road.
According to the Sheriff’s Office news release, a sheriff’s deputy saw a male subject standing near a dumpster near the fire station at around 1 a.m.
“The deputy approached the subject, who identified himself as Dane Hagerty and (said) that he knew the police were looking for him,” the release said.
South Elgin emergency medical service personnel evaluated Hagerty and transported him to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Hagerty had several injuries, but none of them appeared to be life threatening, Gengler said.
The initial search for Hagerty began Saturday, after his wife reported that he had not returned from a business trip. When a St. Charles Park Service officer found Hagerty’s vehicle at the Otter Creek Wetlands, a search of his car revealed a note that led detectives to believe that Hagerty might try to harm himself.
A Kane County Sheriff’s Office K9 team was deployed and led deputies to an outhouse at the Otter Creek Wetland. The track proceeded to lead deputies to the bank of the pond located on the wetland property. During this initial search, deputies located what appeared to be two pools of human blood in the initial search area.
Because of that evidence, the Sheriff’s Office and Kane County Office of Emergency Management coordinated a search of the preserve and surrounding areas on Saturday, Sept. 17, but were unable to locate Hagerty. Detectives now believe Haggerty left the preserve and was hiding in a gazebo northwest of the search area for the past several days.
In the news release, Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer thanked the following agencies for their extensive work in Hagerty’s search:
- Kane County Office of Emergency Management personnel, who coordinated the deployment of more than 75 certified search-and-rescue volunteers from across northern Illinois.
- The Illinois Wisconsin Search and Rescue Dog Association for the deployment of their K9 units.
- Midwest Search and Rescue.
- The Department of Homeland Security for the use of their helicopter.
- The Fox River Countryside Fire Department for their assistance with coordinating the deployment of several fire departments to search a pond where it was initially believed Haggerty would have been found.
- St Patrick’s Catholic Church in St Charles for the use of their parking lot for the staging area for the searchers.
- The Salvation Army for the deployment of their canteen to provide food and water for the search teams.
- St Charles Park District.
