Driver Killed, 8-Year-Old Injured in Weekend Crash on Jericho Road
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 31-year-old Plano man was killed and his 8-year-old son injured in a Saturday crash on Jericho Road near the intersection of Mighell Road in unincorporated Sugar Grove Township.
According to the Sheriff’s Office’s initial investigation, a 2007 Mercury Montego driven by Esteban Velazquez was traveling west on Jericho Road west of IL Route 47 at around 5:10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 29, 2016) when it went off the road onto the westbound shoulder. A witness told sheriff’s deputies that the Mercury re-entered the roadway, traveled across the roadway and spun out of control. The rear end of the Mercury struck a large tree on the south side of the road.
Velazquez and his 8-year-old son, Steven, a back-seat passenger in the vehicle, were extricated by fire personnel.
Velazquez was air lifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was pronounced deceased. His son was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver and his son were restrained at the time of the crash.
Sheriff’s Office detectives say high speed appeared to have been a factor, but they have not determined if texting, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Jericho Road was closed between IL Route 47 and Mighell Road for about five hours while the crash was investigated.
