Bond Set at $5 Million For Elgin Man Accused of Murder, Kidnapping and Home Invasion
An Elgin man faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, home invasion and aggravated unlawful restraint for allegedly shooting Elgin resident Norberto Gutierrez twice with a .40-caliber pistol following an altercation.
Bail for Alberto J. Sepeda, 29, was set at $5 million, according to The Elgin Courier-News.
According to an Elgin Police Department news release, officers responded at around 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, to the 800 block of Morgan Street for reports of a disturbance. Arriving officers located a gunshot victim, identified as Gutierrez ,who was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Officers also observed the suspect, identified as Sepeda of the 300 block of South Belmont Street, fleeing the scene in a vehicle with two occupants who police said were forced against their will into the vehicle by Sepeda.
Officers gave chase, and after a short vehicle pursuit, Sepeda was taken into custody in the 1100 block of Oakley Avenue, without incident. The occupants of the vehicle, a 25-year-old female and a 1-year-old female child, were not injured, police said.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the quick actions of the first responding officers led to the immediate capture.
“I am proud of the work done by the officers on this case, which will help to bring justice to the victim’s family,” he said.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Norberto Gutierrez, performed an autopsy and determined the preliminary cause of death as “Multiple Gunshot Wounds.” Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab.
The public is reminded that an arrest is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
