Kane County’s last recycling event of 2016 is taking place this Saturday — a last chance to unload those big TVs, the cans of Latex paint that have been cluttering up your basement or shred those confidential documents stacking up on your desk.

There will be a recycling event on the second Saturday in January — Jan. 14, 2017 — but that will only include books and electronics.

While electronics recycling is a big part of the upcoming recycling event, it’s not the only thing you can recycle from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday Nov. 12, at the Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

The list this time around includes Latex paint, books and confidential document shredding. There are fees for the Latex paint and for recycling electronics with screens, so pay attention. The recycling service is free for books, electronics (other than TVs and monitors) and document shredding.

Residents can recycle electronics, including computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions (any size or age), stereos, cell phones, microwaves, Christmas lights, and more. A complete list of accepted items, and more information can be found on this page of the Kane County Recycles website.

Kane County volunteers do the unloading, so all you have to do is drive through, sit back and enjoy the service.

Cost for TVs and Monitors

There will be a fee for TVs and computer monitors — both tube and flat screen — across the board for all drop-off locations and the event.

“You will find that there is a cost for these items pretty much everywhere these days,” Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

The fee is $25 for screens 20 inches and under (measured diagonally) and $35 for screens 21 inches and over. All other acceptable electronic items can be dropped off for free. See the full list of items that can be recycled in the program here.

The fee may be paid online in advance or onsite by exact cash or card. It is recommended that you pay online in advance and bring your receipt to any drop-off or the collection event.

“You must have the receipt with you!” Jarland said.

The fee that you pay for screened equipment goes directly to the county’s contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a nonprofit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals.

What Else Can I Recycle on Saturday?

BOOKS: Kane County accepts books of any age and condition for reuse or recycling.

PAINT: Liquid Latex paint has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check. The fee is is $2 per pint, $3.50 per gallon, and $10 per 5-gallon bucket.

Jarland explained the reason for the fee.

“Latex paint is nontoxic but difficult to dispose, because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash,” she said. “However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary!”

No oil based product will be accepted. Residents are asked to pay cash or by check only for the Latex paint recycling.

DOCUMENTS: Bring your confidential documents in paper bags or boxes. The limit is four boxes. Document recycling is for Kane County residents only, not for businesses. More guidelines can be found at on this page of the Kane County Recycles website.

Kane County does not accept hazardous waste or large household appliances, such as washers and refrigerators.
