Rumors of Larsen House Holiday Light Show Shutdown Greatly Exaggerated

The village of Campton Hills announced Wednesday (Nov. 2, 2016) that the rumors of shutting down one of Kane County’s most-watched, private-home holiday light shows are greatly exaggerated.

“Recently, there has been quite a bit of press coverage, as well as social media discussion, regarding the Larsen Light Show on Beith Road,” the village said in a newsletter e-blast. “Contrary to anything you may have heard or read, the village has no interest, intent or authority to shut down Mr. Larsen’s light show.”

The light show has gained national attention as a winner in the 2013 season of ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” according to the Larsens Light Show website.

The show will go on in 2016, starting Nov. 24 and running through Jan. 1. The hours are 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The house is located at 42W891 Beith Road.

Although the village wasn’t interested in shutting down the light show, it was concerned about public safety, saying the holiday light show “has created traffic issues that have caused concern about the ability of police and fire personnel to respond to any emergency situation that may be in the area surrounding and adjacent to Beith Road.”

Apparently, some of those concerns were mitigated, when Brian Larsen agreed to provide flaggers and public safety personnel from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days to improve the traffic problems caused by the popularity of the show.

  • Thursday, Nov. 24
  • Friday, Nov. 25
  • Saturday, Nov. 26
  • Friday, Dec. 2
  • Saturday, Dec. 3
  • Friday, Dec. 9
  • Saturday, Dec. 10
  • Friday, Dec. 16
  • Saturday, Dec. 17
  • Monday, Dec. 19
  • Tuesday, Dec. 20
  • Wednesday, Dec. 21
  • Thursday, Dec. 22
  • Friday, Dec. 23
  • Saturday, Dec. 24
  • Monday, Dec. 26
  • Tuesday, Dec. 27
  • Wednesday, Dec. 28
  • Thursday, Dec. 29
  • Friday, Dec. 30, 2016

On those dates, the process will work as follows:

There will be two flaggers, one positioned near Anderson Road and Beith Road and the second on Beith Road near Larsen’s home. The flaggers will allow traffic to stop between them on eastbound Beith Road. Periodically, the flaggers will  allow the traffic from the east and west to move around those vehicles stopped in the eastbound lane that are viewing the show. Westbound traffic will not be allowed to stop at all.

The village says this process is similar to what happens for many road construction projects.

This year, Larsen’s show will be 25 minutes long. Larsen will be using traffic control personnel to move vehicles in and out of his parking lot at the beginning and end of each performance. According to the village’s news release, Larsen is going to allow for a 10-minute intermission between shows for the parking lot to empty and fill.  During this time, vehicles stacked on eastbound Beith Road will also move on, and new vehicles will be allowed to move into the stacking area for the next performance.

Larsen will be coordinating his show with Campton Hills Highway District during predicted storm events. When there is a predicted serious snow storm, Larsen will not be operating his show.

This action will allow snowplows to keep the roads clear and safe. Larsen will shut down his show if Campton Hills Highway District contacts him because a snow event has become more serious than predicted, and there is a need for snow plows to service the area in and around Beith Road.
