Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Food Safety which revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
Consumers who have purchased the products are urged to return them to OLMA-XXI, Inc. for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-675-0706, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
