Kane County Recycles announced today that it will hold a special post-holiday recycling event on Jan.14 — and special holiday hours will be in place at the three Kane County electronics-recycling drop-off locations during the coming weeks.

Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said the post-holiday collection will include electronics and books. It will take place between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Kane County Branch Court office at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles.

“Because of the struggles to conduct this event in the snow and cold, we initiated a winter break a year ago, from December through March,” Jarland said. “However, we felt it was important to do a January event because there’s just so much stuff residents want to recycle after the holidays.”

Probably the most-popular post-holiday recycled items are holiday lights. They fall under the category of electronics and can be recycled at no charge. People who receive electronic gifts are often eager to unload an older model, and many New Year’s resolutions include clearing out long-stored electronic items.

Kane County’s monthly recycling events will again take a hiatus in February and March, and resume again in April 2017.

“And remember: You can always use the permanent drop-off locations between now and then, before and after the January event,” Jarland said.

Holiday Hours for Electronics Drop-offs

The Kane County Electronics Recycling Drop-offs are open Monday through Friday every week, except for a couple upcoming closures for the holidays. Please note that all three locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Nov. 24  and Nov. 25. They will also be closed for Boxing Day, the Monday after Christmas, Dec. 26.

The cost for recycling television sets and computer monitors is $25 for screens that measure under 21 inches diagonally. The cost is $35 for screens measuring 21 inches or more diagonally. You can pay at site with cash or card only or pay online in advance at countyofkane.org/Recycling.

Fabyan Parkway, Batavia

• Address: 517 Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, IL 60510 (former jail site)
• Hours:  8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday

South Elgin Public Works

• Address: 735 Martin Drive, South Elgin, IL 60177 (Old Public Works Department)
• Hours:  8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday

West Dundee Public Works

• Address: 900 Angle Tarn, West Dundee, IL 60118
• Hours:  7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. (Note that these hours are an hour earlier than other sites.)

About the Recycling Fees for TVs and Monitors

The fee that you pay for TVs and computer monitors — both tube and flat screen — goes directly to the county’s contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals.
