The city of St. Charles has put up flashing pedestrian signs on Kirk Road, Dunham Place and Peck Road to increase safety near St. Charles East High School ad the Otter Cover Aquatic Park.

The signs are installed at crosswalks where there is no traffic light to stop traffic and give pedestrians a “walk” sign to cross the street, the city of St. Charles said in a recent news release. When pedestrians are ready to cross, they push a button that activates flashing orange lights around the sign.

In St. Charles, the signs are installed at three locations:

• Kirk Road and Stadium Drive near St. Charles East High School Stadium.
• Dunham Road at Dunham Place, also near St. Charles East High School.
• Peck Road and Springfield Way near Otter Cove Aquatic Park.

“The lights alert drivers that someone waiting to cross,” said St. Charles Police Department Cmdr. Erik Mahan. “Illinois law requires all drivers to stop for pedestrians entering a crosswalk. So please be aware of this when you are out driving.”
