A box truck failed to stop in time and rammed into a moving train, causing the derailment of four train cars and blocking two rail crossings Saturday (Nov. 12, 2016) in Burlington Township.

No one on the train was hurt, and the driver sustained minor injuries, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff's badge SMALLDeputies responded at around 2 a.m. Saturday to a report of a truck that struck the side of a freight train at the rail crossing on Plank Road east of Waughon Road in unincorporated Burlington Township.

The Sheriff’s Office’s initial investigation indicates that a 2011 International box truck driven by David Pye, 46, of Schaumburg was traveling east on Plank Road when it failed to stop for a moving freight train. The truck struck an empty rail car, and the impact then pushed four empty rail cars off the tracks. The truck and train were both empty of cargo.

The crossing had a functioning signal and gate at the time of the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.

Pye was transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb with minor injuries. He was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The rail crossing on Plank Road and a second crossing on Peplow Road, in the town of Burlington, were blocked while the crash was investigated and Canadian National Railroad personnel worked to clear the tracks.
