UDPATE: Show Goes On, But Snow Puts a Damper on Extended Leaf Collection
Because of the late fall and with leaves still trickling as we entered December, some Kane County communities extended their leaf collection program pick-up periods.
But because of the 7 inches of snow that fell this week, at least two communities — Geneva and St. Charles — have slightly modified their plans.
Below are just a few of the news releases sent in the past few days. To check on your town’s leaf-pickup program, visit your city’s or village’s public works or municipal website.
Aurora
The city of Aurora’s free leaf collection was scheduled to conclude this week, but has been extended until Friday, Dec. 9.
“With this unseasonal weather, trees are still dropping their leaves and residents can use an extra week to clean their yards,”said Aurora Mayor Robert J. O’Connor. “We heard from many throughout the community and are glad to be able work with Republic Services to offer this one-week extension.”
Leaves must be put into a 30-gallon Kraft paper yard waste bag and placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the regular garbage pickup day. No waste sticker is needed.
The free collection applies to leaves ONLY. Any bags with brush and yard waste must have a waste sticker attached and cannot exceed 50 lbs.each. Brush and yard waste will also be collected through Friday, Dec. 9.
Geneva
DEC. 6 UPDATE:
Winter Weather Cancels Curbside Leaf Collection; Residents Can Bag Leaves For Free In December
With 7 inches of snow sweeping through Geneva Dec. 4 combined with colder weather ahead, the City’s remaining special curbside leaf pickups have been cancelled for the winter.
Residents still needing to dispose of their leaves for free can utilize the City’s leaf bag collection program that runs throughout December. Refuse stickers are not required, but bags must only contain leaves. Yard waste, mulch or grass clippings mixed with leaves will not be accepted. Bags can be placed at the curb on residents’ regular garbage day.
Geneva’s curbside leaf collection passed every street three times during October and November as part of its annual program. However, after a delayed start to the fall season and inquiries from residents, the City Council Nov. 21 authorized a special fourth collection throughout the community.
The City’s leaf contractor was able to conduct one additional pickup in Zone B on the City’s northwest side during the last week of November. Work was scheduled to begin this week on the southwest (Zone C) and east side (Zone A) before inclement weather struck the region.
Geneva’s contractor attempted to resume operations Dec. 6, but the snow and frost-covered leaves clogged the contractor’s vacuum equipment in their trucks. With temperatures expected to drop in the coming week, the decision was made to cancel the Zone C and A collections for the winter. The City will evaluate if a special curbside leaf pickup will be needed in those two zones come spring once warmer weather melts the snow.
St. Charles
DEC. 5 UPDATE:
Kramer Tree Services will start picking up the leaves across the entire city Tuesday, Dec, 6. If it’s possible to dust off the snow so they can see the piles of leaves, that would be helpful. Leaves will be collected Tuesday and Wednesday. They need to pick up the piles before things freeze over. If the leaves cannot be picked up, they can be disposed of in refuse bags–no sticker needed–for pick up with regular refuse by Advance Disposal through December.
The city of St. Charles is conducting an additional leaf pick up for the entire city beginning Dec. 5.
At Monday night’s Government Services Committee Meeting, the City Council unanimously approved staff recommendation for an additional leaf collection to accommodate residents since many trees were late dropping their leaves this year.
