Elgin Father, Son Charged With Cocaine Possession With Intent to Deliver
A father and son from Elgin have been charged for possessing illegal drugs they planned to sell.
Travis Charles, 58, and Travis A. Charles, 34, both of the 600 block of Slade Avenue, Elgin, each is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony. In addition,
Travis A. Charles is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 2 felony, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, a Class 3 felony, and unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a Class 4 felony.
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Master Sgt. Bill Backus of the North Central Narcotics Task Force allege that when officers from the North Central Narcotics Task Force served a search warrant at the Charles’ home the evening of Jan. 4, 2017, they found approximately 240 grams of cocaine, 14 grams of marijuana, items commonly associated with drug dealing, such as a scale, plastic bags and a cutting agent, a loaded handgun, and an estimated $20,000 in cash.
Charles and Charles appeared Thursday (Jan. 5, 2017) in Kane County bond court. Bail for Travis A. Charles was set at $150,000 with 10 percent ($15,000) to apply for bond. Bail for Travis Charles was set at $50,000 with 10 percent ($5,000) to apply for bond. The next court appearance for both was set for 9 a.m. Feb. 2, 2017, in front of Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti in Courtroom 319 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Both men remain held at the Kane County jail.
The North Central Narcotics Task Force conducted the investigation.
The charges against the Charles and Charles are not proof of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
