UPDATE Coroner’s Office: 18-Year-Old Shot in Aurora Township Died of Self-Inflicted Gunshot

The Kane County Coroner’s Office reported today (Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017) that the 18-year-old shot Monday in a North Aurora home died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the Coroner’s Office news release, staff responded at around 3:30 p.m. Monday to the 600 block of S. Gladstone Avenue and found the body of the 18-year-old later identified as Jared Peters of Aurora. An autopsy was performed today at the Kane County Morgue, with the preliminary cause of death being “Self-inflicted Gunshot Wound to the Head.”

Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office had reported Monday that Peters had been shot to death after he broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend.

The initial Sheriff’s Office report said sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the residence in unincorporated Aurora Township for a report of a subject who had been shot inside the residence. The initial investigation indicated that Peters gained entry to the residence and had a confrontation with an adult female who was home alone. The two subjects had a prior dating relationship.

At some point, shots were fired inside the residence. The exact details of what occurred inside the residence were not immediately available.

Detectives recovered a handgun from inside the residence.

‘Detectives believe this is an isolated domestic-related incident,” the report said. “Detectives are not looking for anyone else related to this incident.”

There had been earlier reports of a suspicious person in the area of the residence at the time of the incident. It was determined that the suspicious person was in fact the deceased.

The investigation is ongoing, and Kane County sheriff’s deputies are being assisted by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the Kane County Coroner’s Office and the Aurora Police Department.
