The Kane County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2017) that the Tuesday death of 48-year-old Kane Correctional Center detainee was caused by cardiac failure.

The Coroner’s Office news release goes on to say that the office is still awaiting results of toxicology samples collected and sent to a forensic lab.

According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report, officers at the Kane County Adult Correctional Center were notified by detainees that one of their cellmates — Alan Span, 48, of Elgin — was having some sort of a medical emergency. Corrections staff, including on-site medical personnel, responded immediately. Fox River EMS also responded to the emergency.

Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and at approximately 2:15 a.m., the detainee was pronounced deceased at the correctional center.

The Illinois State Police were called to conduct the investigation because the death occurred while Span was in custody. The preliminary investigation does not indicate foul play was involved.

Span was originally processed in the facility on July 13, 2016, and was being held on charges for home invasion and delivery of a controlled substance.
